sushi tuesday

Yesterday my friend Demi and I decided to crack up some sushi and onigiri :) We'd attempted sushi before, but onigiri was definitely an experiment. Firsty, I would like to declare that we are by no means chefs/sushi experts. We sort of did everything by instinct, so if you're doing this for the first time, I suggest you find a proper recipe.
I guess it was a bit of a risk to do it our way, but we had fun and we liked the taste of these little pillows of heaven ! (making sushi corny, how dare I.)

As soon as the rice was ready, we started preparing the filling! We sort of made it up as we went along (oops).
We sliced a raw tuna filet and marinated it in soy saus, salt-pepper and sesame seeds. This we combined with some lovely, fresh cucumber.

For a different filling we made a mix of surimi sticks, cucumber, suy sauce, salt-pepper and ginger.

So after a lot of fidgeting, and even more cleaning-up, this is what we had :

We are happy and proud, and ready to dig in !

The Paper Kites

So I realized there's something special about Australian indie-folk bands.
I'm not really sure what it is, but they have a completely different vibe to
them than say American or British indie-folk bands.
Maybe I'm just generalising here, I can't pretend that I'm the expert on the matter.
But lately, having discovered Boy & Bear, The Middle East and The Paper Kites,
it feels like I've discovered a completely new genre. Oh and I shouldn't forget
Angus and Julia Stone and Big Scary.

Here's a quick playlist. First, close your eyes. Then pick a number, from 1 to 7 and listen to the song!

  1. fall at your feet; boy & bear
  2. jesus came to my birthday part; the middle east
  3. silver coin; angus & julia stone
  4. thinking about you; big scary
  5. memoriess & dust;  josh pyke
  6. silver revolver;  lady of the sunshine
  7. bloom; paper kites

i kind of like this photo. (discovered picnik)

Looks as if I have a giant flower on my head.

Les adieux à la reine

Léa Seydoux et Diane Kruger dans un film de Benoît Jacquot

Breakfast

He poured the coffee
Into the cup
He poured the milk
Into the cup of coffee
He added the sugar
To the coffee and milk
He stirred it
With a teaspoon
He drank the coffee
And put back the cup
Without speaking to me
He lit a cigarette
He blew some rings
With the smoke
He flicked the ashes
Into the ashtray
Without speaking to me
Without looking at me
He got up
He put his hat
On his head
He put on
His raincoat
Because it was raining
He went out
Into the rain
Without a word
Without looking at me
And I
I took my head
In my hands
And I wept
- Jacques Prévert

Another Playlist!

Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins.
My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip
of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth.
Lo. Lee. Ta.

Whip It!

One of those kind of cliche-ish coming of age indeed. This is embarassing but I will quote wikipedia:
"It's quirky enough to appeal to the cool kids, but never strays too far from the mainstream."
I think I will be using this phrase often from now on.
So why this film?

1.  Drew Barrymore directed it.
(see Best Coast video for Our Deal for a quick taste)

2. Ellen Page.(who else)

3. Roller Derby and everything it entails.
This is the most awesome sport ever.
I wish I could join a team. (even if only for the outfits/nicknames).
I mean, Hurl Scouts!
These are the toughest scouts in town:
Smashley Simpson, Babe Ruthless, Maggie Mayhem
and Bloody Holly

4. Landon Pigg andTurbo Fruits
Mr. Charmer-boy belongs to an awesome indie-rock band

5. The soundtrack includes:
Ramones, Little Joy, The Ettes, Tilly and the Wall
The Raveonettes,

6. The love-story part
does stray a little from the mainstream,
so a cheer for that!
7. There's an underwater scene

8. Food Fight!

January's Inspiration

Finally brought myself to give this novel another try. Oh, don't get me wrong, reader,
I never intentionally gave it up, I just found it too difficult to follow. Remember, English isn't my mother tongue.
Thoroughly enjoyed it this time though, now time to watch both film versions!

Air

First time I listened to these two guys was 3 years ago, when my (then) crush burned their music for the Virgin Suicides on a CD for me. I must admit, I found the music quite intriguing, but almost felt guilty about listening to it. There is something very sensual about it, which fits perfectly the atmosphere of the film as I later on discovered. In any case, I have this bad habit of listening to music when reading a novel.
So then as the story takes a visual form in my mind, the music is simply the soundtrack.
Playground Love was the soundtrack to Lolita, most of the time.

The entire Born To Die album by Lana Del Rey. I plead guilty to obsession.
Again, Lana's music has become my soundtrack for Lolita.
This was clearly inevitable, considering all the references:
the song Lolita
"Light of my life, fire of my loins" in Off to the Races

Hey Lolita Hey !

Into The Wild

Would it be an exaggeration if I said that for a few hours I was in love with Alexander Supertramp?
He was such a (lame description ahead) genuinely good person? Intelligent, conciderate and sympathetic but also so passionate and full of life. I was completely devastated in the end.

Rookie Mag's Shrine Post *click*
Definitely in my to do list. However, I think I want to leave my shrine building til uni next year perhaps.
It'll be my first step in decorating my room.

The Real Inspector Hound by Tom Stoppard

Let me start by saying that if you haven't seen the '90 film
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead written and directed by Stoppard,
go do that right now. It's one of the best things I've seen.
Oh, and Gary Oldman and Tim Roth are the protagonists, need I say more?
However, the real inspector hound is the play my drama group is preparing, for school.
Not only is it hilarious, there are some very poetic parts in it:
"Magicians sawn in half by indefatigably smiling glamour girls."

  Biology class
We examined a bull's heart.
